The Soča Trail is one of the most beautiful and accessible hikes in Triglav National Park. It follows the emerald waters of the Soča River through the upper Soča Valley and offers a perfect combination of natural beauty, interesting landscapes, and historical points of interest.
For many visitors, the Soča is simply the most beautiful alpine river in Europe, famous for its striking emerald color and crystal-clear water.
- Starting point: Source of the Soča River (46.409, 13.725)
- Distance: 27km
- Elevation gain: 350 m
- Duration: 8 hours of hiking
- Difficulty: Easy
- Best season: Spring, Summer and Autumn
- Highlights: Kugy’s monument, Mlinarica gorges, Soča source, Small and Large Soča gorges, Kršnik gorges

The trail begins at the Source of the Soča River above the valley of Trenta Valley. The first section includes a short but slightly more demanding climb to the spring itself, where the river emerges from a deep underwater cave… You have to see the spring, because the color of the water is unrealistically beautiful.
From there the trail descends into the valley and begins following the river downstream.
The trail continues along forest paths, scenic riverbanks, and several charming suspension bridges that offer fantastic views of the river. Along the way you will also pass the Julius Kugy Monument, dedicated to Julius Kugy, one of the most important explorers and writers connected with the Julian Alps.

One of the first highlights are the beautiful Mala Korita Soče, a narrow gorge where the river carved deep channels into bright limestone rock. Further along the trail you reach the much larger and even more impressive Velika Korita Soče. These dramatic gorges are among the most spectacular natural sights in the Soča Valley, where the turquoise water flows through deep, polished rock walls.
A little further down the valley you will reach Korita pri Kršovcu, another beautiful section of the river with calm pools and smooth rock formations.

Swimming is possible in several places along the trail, especially in some calmer sections of the river. Popular spots include pools in Mala Korita Soče, near the end of Velika Korita Soče, and in other quieter parts of the river along the way. Keep in mind that the water of the Soča River remains extremely cold even during the summer months.
The Soča Trail follows the river from the very beginning of the Trenta Valley all the way to its end, where the Soča meets the Koritnica River near Bovec.
Along the way you pass several campsites and small stops where hikers can refill drinking water, take a short break, or enjoy a meal. Because of this, you usually don’t need to carry large amounts of food or water with you, which makes the hike even more pleasant and accessible.

The hike can be completed in several sections, but many hikers choose to follow the river all the way to the alpine town of Bovec. From there you can easily take a bus back toward the upper valley, with stops that bring you close to the starting point near the Source of the Soča River.
This hike is perfect for anyone who wants to experience the wild beauty of the Soča Valley while enjoying a relatively easy and incredibly scenic walk through one of the most stunning parts of the Slovenian Alps.
