  • Starting point: Planina Kuhinja (46.241, 13.663)
  • Distance: 15 km
  • Elevation gain: 2500 m
  • Duration: 6–8 hours (round trip)
  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Best season: Summer and autumn
  • Highlights: Krn summit, Lužnica Lake, Batognica, World War I remnants, panoramic views, Rdeči rob, energetic circles

This circular hike to Krn starts at Planina Kuhinja, a peaceful alpine pasture that serves as an excellent base for exploring the surrounding peaks. From here, the trail passes through Planina Leskovca and continues toward the serene Jezero v Lužnici, a small glacial lake tucked beneath rugged cliffs, perfect for a short break and photos.

On the way to Jezero v Lužnici, hikers pass Rdeči rob, a mountain with a completely different rock composition compared to the surrounding peaks. While most mountains in this part of the Julian Alps are made of gray limestone, Rdeči rob stands out with its striking reddish hue.

From the lake, hikers ascend along Batognica toward the summit of Krn, one of the most iconic peaks in the Julian Alps. Along Batognica, hikers will notice numerous remnants from World War I, including trenches, fortifications, and the site of a massive explosion used to lower the peak. The climb rewards hikers with stunning panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, including Triglav, Krnsko Jezero, and the high peaks of the Bovec region. The summit itself offers sweeping vistas in every direction.

On the descent, the trail follows the grassy slopes of Krn back toward Planina Kuhinja, passing by a few minor historical remnants along the way. Interestingly, the path goes very close to the energetic circles, where hikers can pause to experience the reportedly strong energy fields of the earth.

This hike combines challenging alpine climbs, glacial lakes, expansive pastures, breathtaking panoramas, a touch of World War I history, unique geology at Rdeči rob, and even mystical energy spots, making it a perfect adventure for hikers seeking both nature and history.
