This hike begins in the peaceful Lepena Valley, following a well-marked former military path that climbs moderately toward the Krn battlefields of World War I. The trail is mostly wide, but in some rocky sections, especially on the descent, walking at a relaxed pace can be a bit tricky.

After about two hours of climbing, hikers reach the area where two of the three Krn lakes are located: Dupelj Lake and the larger Krn Lake. The Krnsko Jezero lodge is a perfect spot for a short rest or even an overnight stay. Just three minutes from the hut, you’ll find Dupelj Lake, a smaller glacial lake perfect for photos or a quick break.

Continuing along the trail, hikers reach Krnsko Jezero, the largest alpine lake in the Julian Alps, nestled beneath Krn. From the lake, it takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes to reach the summit of Krn. The path is wonderfully varied: first, you stroll along the lake, then pass a beautiful alpine meadow, and as you gain elevation, the terrain becomes increasingly rocky and rugged.

At Krnska Škrbina, the saddle between Batognica and Krn, hikers encounter remnants from World War I, and along the route, there are several other historical military remains to discover. From this saddle, you get your first glimpse of the Soča Valley below, near Kobarid and Tolmin, adding an extra reward before the final ascent. The climb toward the summit is steep but breathtaking, crossing stunning karst meadows with ever-expanding panoramic views.

After Krn, hikers reach the small hut near the summit, located just about 5 minutes below the peak. This hut is open during the summer season and offers an excellent spot to rest, enjoy a snack, or purchase a refreshing drink before continuing. From there, the trail descends toward Krnska Škrbina, the saddle between Krn and Batognica, and then climbs to Batognica, a peak historically lowered by several meters during World War I using 5,000 kg of explosives. Between Batognica and Piramida, crossing the slope of Vrh nad Peski, hikers enjoy views of the third Krn lake – Jezero v Lužnici. The trail continues past Prehodci and the former military barracks at Za Lepočami, where several historical World War I sites remain.

Finally, the route returns to the Krnsko Jezero lodge and descends back to Lepena Valley, completing a circular hike rich in alpine lakes, dramatic peaks, and historical sites.

Tip for other days in the Soča Valley: If you have extra time in the area, consider visiting Velika Korita Soče near the crossroads into Lepena or the charming Šunik Water Grove in Lepena. Both are stunning natural sights and perfect for a shorter, easier outing on a different day.
