  • Duration: 2 days (approx. 13 hours of hiking)

This circular hike starts in the picturesque village of Stara Fužina, located at the western end of the beautiful Bohinj Valley.

From the village, the trail first leads past the beautiful Korita Mostnice, a narrow gorge where crystal-clear water flows through polished limestone formations. Near the end of the valley hikers also pass an impressive 25-metre waterfall, a perfect place for a short break before the ascent into the high mountains.

From here begins a roughly two-hour climb toward Malo Polje and Velo Polje, two beautiful alpine meadows surrounded by some of the highest peaks of the Julian Alps. Here stands the charming mountain hut Vodnikov dom na Velem polju, an ideal place to rest, enjoy a traditional mountain meal, or spend the night.

From Velo Polje, and especially from the viewpoint in front of the hut, hikers are rewarded with one of the most beautiful views of Mount Triglav, Slovenia’s highest mountain. An iconic view of all three “heads” of Triglav, rising 2864m high. Below the mighty walls, you can clearly see the Planika hut, and below it, even more mighty walls and deep below, the beautiful meadows of Vele Polje, the whole scene creating one of the most recognizable mountain panoramas in the country.

I highly recommend spending the night at Vodnikov dom. The next morning, the route briefly returns toward Malo Polje before continuing toward Planina pod Mišelj vrhom and then climbing toward the ridge of Prevalski Stog. From this grassy summit you can enjoy a spectacular panoramic viewpoint — one of the most beautiful viewpoints in the Bohinj area.

From Prevalski Stog the trail continues across the traditional alpine pastures of Planina Laz, Planina pri Jezeru, and Planina Vogar, before descending gently back to the starting point in Stara Fužina.

From Vodnikov dom onward, this route becomes one of the most beautiful and enjoyable hiking trails in the Julian Alps. The trail crosses wide grassy slopes, traditional alpine pastures, and offers magnificent views of the surrounding mountains. Despite its beauty, these trails remain relatively quiet — even during the peak summer season — making the hike especially peaceful and rewarding.

This two-day route is perfect for hikers who want to experience tranquil alpine valleys, authentic mountain pastures, panoramic views of Triglav, and some of the most scenic landscapes in the Bohinj region. Spending a night high in the mountains also allows you to fully enjoy the calm alpine atmosphere of this remarkable part of the Julian Alps.
